This encounter illustrates how, despite the diverse racial make-up of Nairobi residents, mixed race marriages (Black-White) are still met with surprise. I am constantly surprised that it is still a surprise. I didn't take field jottings about it, but I similarly got questioned about why I married a Kenyan man by many of the taxi drivers that I spoke with who mentioned that "white people only marry other white people."
